ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Program Description:
The undergraduate program of the NDHU English Department was established in 1996. Four years later, the Master's Program was founded. In 2005, in response to an increasing trend of multi-interdisciplinary studies in the humanities, the Ph.D. Program in Comparative Literature was born. In 2010, due to the merger of NDHU and National Hualien Normal University, TESOL courses were integrated into the NDHU English Department, offering students a wide variety of courses and trainings encompassing literature, theory, cultural studies, creative writing, linguistics, and English pedagogy.
Our Department draws upon faculty from a wide range of disciplines (Ecocriticism, Queer Studies, Cultural Studies, Ethnic Literature, Global Anglophone Literature, Fantastic Literature, Translation), and we design our curriculum with a focus not only on language proficiency but also on critical thinking skills, multi-cultural perspective, and literature's interdisciplinary link with arts, popular cultures, and other media. Students who major in English will demonstrate familiarity with canons in English, American, and European literatures, as well as methods of studying literature and culture across national boundaries and analyzing literature and culture from a global perspective.
